WenonahThe Wenonah (PDF) neighborhood is named after Hiawatha’s mother, the daughter of Nokomis, from a legend that Henry Wadsworth Longfellow attributes to Ojibwe people in his poem, The Song of Hiawatha. Before 1900, the neighborhood was a major American Indian center. Its borders are 54th Street E on the North, 34th Avenue S on the East, Crosstown 62 on the South, and Cedar Avenue and Lake Nokomis on the West.
Lake Nokomis is an important part of Wenonah’s identity and many residents use the Lake Nokomis Community Center, located just outside of Wenonah proper. Bossen Field lies in the heart of Wenonah. Two schools are within the Wenonah neighborhood, Lake Nokomis Community School – Wenonah Campus and Lake Nokomis Community School – Keewaydin Campus. Like all neighborhoods in Minneapolis, Wenonah has developed a neighborhood policing plan (PDF) to identify areas of improvement, set goals, and build upon its strengths. Wenonah is served the Nokomis East Neighborhood Association. |
