Dislocated Worker Program

Introduction

The City of Minneapolis Dislocated Worker Program serves people who have lost their job through no fault of their own. We connect residents to services which will enable the unemployed to return to work quickly at the highest skill and wage level possible. An employment and training specialist from one of the City of Minneapolis service providers can determine if you are eligible for program services.

Overview

Workers can apply to the Dislocated Worker Program as soon as they have notice of permanent layoff or termination. Services are provided at no cost to eligible participants and they are tailored to individual needs and may include the following:

Individual Counseling

Work individually with an employment specialist to develop a personalized service strategy plan.

  • Assess transferable skills
  • Establish training needs
  • Determine financial support needs
  • Identify community resources
  • Enlist ongoing support and assistance for your training and job search

Career Planning, Job Search and Placement Services

Advice and assistance with career decision-making, developing job goals and personal planning to find a suitable job. Tools and resources may include:

  • Assessment tools to learn more about skills, interests and abilities.
  • Assistance with preparing resumes, cover letters, interviewing skills, and successful job networking.
  • Job lead development and how to uncover positions not advertised.

Training

Counselor-approved training is encouraged for clients needing to update skills or pursue new career opportunities.

  • Help you identify your needs and research training options at public and some private educational institutions.
  • Program dollars are available for tuition, books, and required supplies.

Support Services

Assistance helps participants address issues that impact their ability to obtain employment.

  • Limited financial assistance for transportation, childcare, healthcare, housing, and other emergency needs.
  • Referrals to community resources.

Resource Centers

Resource centers offer career information and job-search resources.

  • Computers for word processing
  • Internet access for job search
  • Copiers
  • Fax machines
  • Telephones
  • Labor market information
  • Career research information

Eligibility: Counselors assess each person’s situation. Please note that not every laid off worker is a dislocated worker, and not every dislocated worker receives training.

Employees who wish to inquire about these services should state that they are being laid off and are interested in the Dislocated Worker program.

Other Resources

The Minnesota WorkForce Center System is a public service system that offers some job transition services to the general public at no charge. These services include resource rooms at local WorkForce Centers, labor market and career information, job opening information, and classes on job search skills/strategies. Many job seeker services can be accessed online. People can also stop in at WorkForce Centers to use self-help tools and resources available in the resource rooms.
