Steps to a Healthier US was a five-year initiative of the US Department of Health and Human Services that aimed to help Americans live longer, better and healthier lives by reducing the burden of diabetes, obesity, and asthma. The initiative addressed three related risk factors –
The Minnesota Department of Health provided Steps funding to Minneapolis, St. Paul, Rochester, and Willmar from 2004-2009. The Minneapolis Department of Health and Family Support (MDHFS) implemented Steps to a Healthier Minneapolis in four settings: community, health care, schools and worksites. Building on the success of Steps, Minneapolis SHIP and MDHFS will use evidence-based strategies to create changes in policies, environments and systems to reduce obesity and tobacco use/exposure.
